Frequently Asked Questions — Federal Tax Prep

Who is required to file a federal tax return?

Most U.S. citizens and permanent residents must file if their income exceeds the standard deduction threshold — $14,600 for single filers and $29,200 for married filing jointly in 2024. You may also need to file if you had self-employment income over $400, received advance premium tax credits, or owe alternative minimum tax. We can tell you in minutes whether you're required to file.

How long does it take to prepare my federal return?

For most individuals, we complete the return within 2–5 business days of receiving all your documents. Simple returns can sometimes be done same-day. Complex returns (multiple businesses, rental properties, extensive investments) may take up to a week. We'll give you a clear timeline upfront.

What if I owe taxes — what are my options?

If you owe the IRS, you have several options: pay in full, set up an installment agreement, request a temporary delay, or — if you qualify — settle for less through an Offer in Compromise. Our tax resolution team can help you choose the best path.

What deductions are people most likely to miss?

Common missed deductions include: home office expenses for remote workers, vehicle mileage for business, self-employed health insurance premiums, student loan interest, educator expenses, energy-efficient home improvements, and charitable cash contributions without receipts. We conduct a thorough review so nothing is overlooked.

Can you prepare returns for multiple states?

Yes. We prepare federal returns bundled with any state returns you need — all 50 states. This is especially helpful if you worked in multiple states or moved during the year.

What if the IRS sends me a letter after filing?

We stand behind every return we prepare. If you receive an IRS notice, contact us immediately. We'll review the notice, explain what it means, and respond on your behalf at no additional charge for issues related to our preparation.

Can I upload documents remotely or do I need to come in?

Both options are available. You can drop off in person at our Tampa office, or use our secure client document portal to upload everything digitally. Many of our clients file without ever stepping into the office.

How much does federal tax preparation cost?

Pricing depends on the complexity of your return. Individual returns start at a competitive flat rate, and we always quote your fee before we begin. There are no hidden charges — what we quote is what you pay.

Do you handle amended returns (Form 1040-X)?

Yes. If you filed a return elsewhere (or even with us in a prior year) and believe something was missed or incorrect, we can prepare an amended return to recover money owed to you. Amended returns can go back up to 3 years.

What years can you file for?

We can prepare returns for any open tax year. The IRS generally allows you to file back returns for at least 3 years and claim refunds for those periods. For compliance or resolution purposes, we can go back further.
